Something powerful happens in a marriage when one person turns to the other and says, with quiet, deliberate presence — I see you. The power of “I see you” is not about fixing anything, solving a problem, or checking something off a list. It is about pausing long enough to notice the human being standing right in front of you.
The one who shows up day after day, doing the things no one claps for. The one who carries burdens they have not fully named. When was the last time you looked at your spouse and let them know that who they are matters to you?

We live in a world that is loud and fast. Between work and kids and bills and schedules and the sheer weight of just keeping life together, it is easy to fall into the rhythm of coexisting. You are both in the same house, sitting on the same couch, sleeping in the same bed — and still somehow missing each other. Not because you do not care. But because exhaustion has a way of pulling your eyes to everything except the person beside you. And over time, when someone does not feel seen, they start to disappear. Not physically — but emotionally. They pull back. They stop sharing. They stop hoping that you will notice.
That is why this matters so much.
Genesis 16:13 tells us, “She gave this name to the LORD who spoke to her: ‘You are the God who sees me.’”
Hagar — alone, afraid, cast out — was met by a God who did not look away. And the very thing that changed everything for her was not that He rescued her from her circumstance in that moment. It was that He saw her. He saw the real her. The struggling, scared, overlooked her. And she was never the same.
Your spouse needs that from you. Not perfection. Not performance. Just presence.
Think about it — When was the last time you acknowledged the things your spouse does that nobody else sees?
- The way they check the locks before bed.
- The way they push through their own exhaustion to make sure the kids are cared for.
- The small, steady, unspectacular acts of love that hold your household together.
These things are easy to overlook because they are consistent. But consistent does not mean unimportant. Consistent means faithful. And faithfulness deserves to be honored.
Proverbs 20:5 says, “The purposes of a person’s heart are deep waters, but one who has insight draws them out.”
That is what seeing your spouse is all about. It is not just watching — it is drawing out. It is going beneath the surface of “I’m fine” and “It was a long day” and pressing in with curiosity and care. It is choosing to know them at a level that no one else gets to reach.
Lao Tzu once said, “Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage.”
Seeing your spouse deeply — and letting them humble and kind things you can do in your marriage. Because it requires vulnerability. It requires slowing down. It requires letting go of your own agenda long enough to be fully present with someone else’s heart. Notice what matters.
The K.I.S.S. ~ Notice what matters!
So how do you actually do this in real life? How do you move from intention to action?
1. Acknowledge What Goes Unnoticed.
Maybe it is the way they always lock the door at night, how they make sure the kids have what they need, or the quiet sacrifices they make when no one is watching.
Do not let it stay silent. Say it out loud: “I see what you do, and it matters.” Those words land differently than “thanks.” They say, I am paying attention. You are not invisible to me.
2. Eyes Up, Heart Open.
Put your phone down for one full conversation this week. No multitasking. No half-listening. No scrolling while they are mid-sentence.
Give them the gift of your undivided attention. Eye contact is powerful — it tells the other person, right now, you are the most important thing in my world. One real conversation will do more for your connection than a dozen distracted ones.
3. Ask a Deeper Question.
Go beyond “How was your day?” Try something that actually opens the door: “What is on your heart right now?” or “What is one thing I can do to make this week easier for you?” or “What can I do to serve you?”
You might be surprised at what they share when they realize you genuinely want to hear the answer.
TRUTH — Your spouse is not asking you to be perfect. They are asking you to be present. They are asking you to look up from the noise and see them standing there. Not the version of them that shows up at work or at church or at the family dinner. The real one. The one who is tired and hopeful and doing their best and wondering if anyone notices.
You get to be the one who notices.
Marriage is not built on the big moments alone. It is built on the Tuesday nights when you turn to each other and say, “I see you. I am glad it is you.” It is built in the ordinary, unremarkable, sacred space of choosing each other — over and over again.
So this week, slow down. Look closer. Speak life into the person who shares your life. Because when your spouse feels seen, they feel safe. And safety helps love grow deeper.
Just keep falling in love all over again.
“Be present. Be incredible. Be YOU!!!“
