Every summer should have a vacation included. But funds are tight. What if you could have the adventure on a budget? And it works for all ages and couples too!
First off, let’s start with the basics. What does an adventure on a budget include?

Here are the TOP FIVE must haves!
- Dates
- Transportation
- Housing
- Food
- Destination
DATES: Pick the dates that work for you. Think about a way to make it a 3-day weekend.
TRANSPORTATION: You can use your car, or take the local bus or subway. If you were a tourist, you would be taking the local transportation. Explore the city that way.
HOUSING: Set it up like you’re at a hotel. Have clean sheets and remove the bedspread. You don’t have bedspreads on at a hotel. And then add a few extra pillows. Chocolate on the pillows are extra sweet too. If you are swapping homes with another family, then be sure to prepare your house appropriately for them. You can always sleep in the guest room and have the kiddos on the sofa bed or blow up bed. FUN! Don’t forget the water bottles and coffee/tea pot if you drink hot beverages.
FOOD: This is important. Prepare your breakfast thinking like how the hotels make their breakfasts. Get the waffle maker out or make your breakfast burritos. For lunch or dinner, think about where you normally go out to eat. Cook up your own McMommy’s instead of visiting the fast food restaurant. And you can make personal pan pizzas by using the biscuit dough from the refrigerated section of your grocer.
DESTINATION: Think like a tourist in your own town. What’s new and open to the public, meaning FREE. Look for art galleries, history museums, movie nights at the park, hiking trails, national parks, hotel pools, local band concerts and celebrations. Don’t forget about the small town country fairs too.
