As we get older, and somewhat wiser, we tend to forget what living really means. Watching my children go about their activities, what they choose to do, and the words spoken, I was quickly reminded: What is the essence of life?
How do they see it verses how I see it?
Children have a way of living life to its fullest. They are greater risk takers and ultimately know what’s important.

In asking my son, “What is the essence of life?”, he gave me that weird cartoon face. You can see it — eyebrows all different directions, his mouth shaped and curled up like never before. I think his hair stood straight up.
The discussion went deeper and I asked him again, what is the essence of life? What makes life worth living? He was in the game now! He began to separate the BIG and little things in life. Through my experiences working with children, the majority seem to divide the BIG and little things the same way.
Yet when we get older, our focus is still the same but the definition changes.
Women of IMPACT, we se life from the big things — stuck on the responsibilities, job, paying bills, to do lists, other people’s expectations, accomplishments. And our focus that use to be on the BIG things as a child is not of little focus; the relationships, the love, the forgiveness, the happiness.
It’s more about the materialistic picture than the well-being picture.
We ended our conversation with him saying, “Mom, doesn’t it all fit together? But some things are definitely more important, for you it’s the little things.”
HE GOT IT!!!!!
As adults, we discount that children are watching, deserving, and comprehending more than we give them credit for. We are doing them an injustice because we act like they really don’t know. When in actuality, they are spot on and we are ignoring the fact that our definition in the essence of living is confusing to us. We are operating our lives from a disconnect of BIG and little.
