You’ve seen it a thousand times: Buy One Get One free. The offer pops off the shelf, your eye catches the deal, and suddenly, your cart is fuller than intended. But lots of these “deals” aren’t deals at all. They lure you with the promise of abundance, but the truth is, you might not even need what you’re buying, or worse, you might get stuck with what clutters your life or pulls you off course; it’s the BOGO trap.
In life, “buying into” anything like ideas, habits, and shortcuts, without pause, can lead you to a path that feels good for a moment but steals long-term value. And that temptation can be relentless.

It keeps coming at you on so many levels.
With this being Holy Week, I thought it was more than appropriate to reflect on how Jesus responded to what God had in store for His Son.
Jesus’ Journey: The Ultimate Lesson in What to Buy Into
In the early stages of His ministry, after being baptized by John the Baptist, Jesus went into the wilderness, where He fasted for forty days and forty nights.
There, He was tempted in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1-11). The devil offered Him physical relief, instant fame, and shortcuts to power—all seductive “deals.” Yet Jesus saw through the smoke and mirrors and said no. He didn’t buy into easy fixes or flashy bargains; He bought into God’s plan: a path of endurance, truth, and salvation.
The timing of this is important because it shows that Jesus began His mission by facing and overcoming the same temptations we do, laying a foundation of discipline and obedience that carried Him all the way to the cross, to the place where we celebrate at the end of Holy Week, His resurrection.
Jesus facing this head-on is an example of the blueprint for resisting temptation and staying aligned with what’s truly lasting and good.
How Do We Resist Temptation and Discipline Ourselves?
Resisting temptation and choosing the long game requires intentional choices. It’s about training your mind and heart to recognize what serves God’s divine design and His purpose for you, and what’s a distraction dressed up as a blessing.
The K.I.S.S. ~ BOGO God’s way!
At some point, we have to BOGO God’s way, not our way.
Here are three ways to “BOGO” in a way that aligns with God’s desires and leads you on the right path:
1. Buy Into God’s Word First—Before Anything Else
The devil tempted Jesus with scripture (Psalm 91:11–12), yet misused it to serve selfish ends. Your first purchase must be the truth found in God’s Word. Let scripture be your ultimate filter for every decision and offer.
-
Action: Start every day by reading and meditating on scripture that reminds you to whom you serve and what matters most.
- Why: This grounds you in eternal truth and equips you to discern genuine value over empty deals.
2. Buy Into Purpose, Not Pleasure
Temptations often come wrapped in quick pleasure or “easy wins.” But Jesus prioritized purpose, God’s Heavenly mission, over momentary relief. When you make choices anchored in your calling, you avoid the distractions that derail your journey.
-
Action: Clearly define your God-given purpose. When an opportunity arises, ask: Does this advance my calling or just satisfy temporary cravings?
- Why: Choosing purpose over pleasure keeps your path straight and your living legacy unshaken.
3. Buy Into Community and Accountability
Jesus didn’t walk this road alone. He leaned on the Father’s guidance and, before that, He spent time with His disciples. Surrounding yourself with a community that shares your values keeps you honest and aligned.
- Action: Build relationships with believers who challenge you to live rightly and call out when you stray toward false bargains.
- Why: Accountability is a powerful guardrail against the allure of short-term gains that cost more than they’re worth.
The Bottom Line: Choose What Lasts
The “BOGO” mentality often comes with a hidden bill. If you want to walk the path God is calling you to, you have to be smart about what you’re “buying into.”
Don’t let the temptation of easy, flashy offers steal your focus. Instead, follow Jesus’ footsteps: buy into truth, purpose, and community. And watch how in the moment everything changed.
“Be present. Be incredible. Be YOU!!!“
