Every parent’s dream is to see their child flourish in all aspects of life, whether it’s in academics, personal growth, or developing strong social skills. How can parents serve their child well in the new year?
As we step into a brand-new year, I don’t know about you, but I think about how I can best support and guide my children.

Sometimes, I have quick A-HA moments. And other times, I’m flabbergasted. There is no way I know what to do in this season that my child is in.
But regardless of what season you’re in with your child, you can support your child well. And it starts with the heart.
The K.I.S.S. ~ Start with the heart!
Here are three valuable ways to make a positive impact.
1. Cultivate Open Communication
In today’s fast-paced world, where distractions are aplenty, it is vital for parents to create a nurturing environment where their child feels comfortable sharing their thoughts and feelings. Regularly engaging in meaningful conversations helps parents to better understand their child’s hopes, dreams, fears, and challenges. Open communication fosters trust and strengthens the parent-child bond, which is crucial during both good times and rough patches.
“Embracing a new year means embracing new opportunities for growth and connection. As a parent, I encourage you to prioritize open communication with your child. Listen with empathy, validate their feelings, and create space for them to express themselves. This sets a strong foundation for their emotional, intellectual, and personal well-being.” – Kristianne Wargo
2. Set Attainable Goals
Goal-setting is an empowering practice that can guide children toward success and personal fulfillment. Parents can help their child identify realistic goals that nurture their passions and align with their abilities. Whether it’s academic achievements, extracurricular pursuits, or personal milestones, encouraging children to set goals teaches them the value of perseverance, resilience, and self-motivation.
“Through my own experience as a parent, I’ve witnessed the transformative power of goal-setting. Encourage your child to dream big but also guide them in breaking down their goals into manageable steps. One step at a time leads to miles of greatness! This helps them build confidence, resilience, and a sense of purpose as they work towards achieving their dreams.” – Kristianne Wargo
3. Encourage The “Whole” Approach (Well-rounded Development)
While academic success is often placed at the forefront, it’s crucial for parents to recognize the importance of holistic development. Encouraging children to explore diverse interests and hobbies helps them discover their talents, passions, and potential. Exposure to various activities nurtures their creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. By supporting their child’s exploration, parents lay the foundation for well-rounded development.
“As parents, it is our role to provide opportunities for our children to discover and explore their unique talents and passions. By encouraging their interests, we help them develop self-confidence, resilience, and the courage to pursue their dreams. Let’s provide them with a safe space to engage in various activities that foster intellectual, physical, and emotional growth.” – Kristianne Wargo
Parenting in the new year is an opportunity for growth, connection, and empowerment. By embracing open communication, guiding goal-setting, and encouraging the “whole” approach, parents can truly serve their children’s best interests. As we embark on this new chapter, let us prioritize our children’s holistic growth, helping them become confident, purposeful individuals, ready to tackle any challenges that may come their way.
Just because the ball drops, doesn’t mean we drop the ball as parents. Support your child well this new year! Stretch yourself as a parent and be your child’s biggest ambassador.
