The holiday season is portrayed as a time of joy, love, and togetherness. However, for many of us, this idealized image couldn’t be further from their reality. Are your holidays unhealthy?
Toxic and unhealthy people can create a hostile environment that dampens the holiday spirit.

If you find yourself in such a situation, it’s important to prioritize your health and well-being.
By mentally, emotionally, and spiritually preparing yourself, you can navigate the toxicity and protect yourself from its negative impact.
The K.I.S.S. ~ Support others by loving yourself first!
Toxicity does not have to be the decorations on your heart or your body. Here are three strategies to help you turn your holidays around, regardless of how unhealthy they might seem.
1. Mental Preparation:
When dealing with toxic individuals, it’s important to remember that their behavior reflects their character, not yours. The way they treat others speaks volumes about their own internal struggles and issues.
While hurtful comments or actions can be deeply painful, try not to take them personally. Recognize that their toxicity stems from their own unresolved emotions and insecurities. This realization can help you detach emotionally and shield yourself from their negative energy.
Additionally, set boundaries to protect yourself. If attending a certain event will expose you to toxic behavior, consider the option of staying home, leaving early, or rearranging plans to prioritize your well-being.
2. Emotional Resilience:
Accepting the fact that you cannot control other people’s behavior is a powerful step toward maintaining emotional balance. Instead of absorbing the toxicity around you, observe it from a distance. Recognize the unhealthy patterns and realize that these individuals are unknowingly distancing themselves from their true potential.
While this may evoke sadness, try not to let anger consume you. Avoid reacting to their negativity, as this only perpetuates the cycle. Rather take breaks when you feel yourself becoming reactive, focusing on deep breaths and finding moments of calm.
3. Spiritual Strength:
For those who believe in Jesus, tapping into your spiritual foundation can provide invaluable support during difficult times. Remind yourself of your identity in Christ — a child of God, chosen and loved. Reflect on the truth that you are seen as perfect, forgiven, and valued by God. Before attending any holiday gatherings, read and meditate on Ephesians 6:10-18, finding strength in God’s mighty power. Imagining yourself fully protected, cloaked in grace and truth, can provide a sense of security against any assaults on your self-worth. Just as you would don a hazardous materials suit in a toxic environment, consciously equip yourself with the full armor of God. With this armor, you can stand strong against lies and attacks, asserting your worth and protecting your well-being.
Remember, prioritizing your own health and well-being is not selfish — it’s crucial for your overall happiness and fulfillment. Toxic environments are not conducive to thriving, and you deserve to be in spaces that nourish and uplift you. By mentally preparing yourself, fostering emotional resilience, and finding strength in your spiritual foundation, you can turn around your holidays and embrace a healthier approach. Take care of yourself, knowing that you are stewarding yourself well.
