The tendency in life is to want to make things better. ‘How can I fix this?’ A thought whispered quietly in a parent’s heart.
Every day would be so amazing if we could figure out how to fix everything. But in reality, this is not possible.

Some things in life can be controlled by a parent all the while other things can be magnified by the choices of the child.
Unfortunately, there is no one manual on how to raise a child. Every parent has to decide how and what matters.
But one area is wanting only the best which leaves what happens when the worst shows up?
How can I fix this?
Sometimes you can’t. As a parent, we have to realize that we have to step back so our child can step up.
The K.I.S.S. ~ Step back to step up!
We have got to get out of the way of our children. YES!! They need our guidance and discipline. But to work out every problem only sets them up for future failure.
Children need to take responsibility for their actions. And this starts when we are still learning ourselves, as parents, how to raise them. As you can imagine, the process is messy.
One thing is for sure, there is not one right answer. You have to determine what is appropriate for your child and that particular situation.
However, there are some strategies to assist you in stepping back so the children can step up.
How do you step back to step up?
- Ownership – Teach your child to own their actions and their words.
- Model what you want to see. You have to show up as the teacher and model the solution. But don’t give the answer.
- Encourage problem-solving. Ask lots of questions to help your child formulate a resolution. If you are always giving the answer, they will never know how to discover it for themselves.
Parenting is stressful, but it can be fun. Look at parenting as an adventure of a lifetime.
