Have you ever noticed how a child really gets your attention? It’s not just the words, screams, and whines. It is the pitch of a child.
Sound the alarms or calm the waves! Little Debbie wants your attention.

Situations and circumstances are quickly analyzed and intensely discussed based on words, actions, body language, and pitch.
These are typically classified as social cues. But as parents, we use them to gauge the seriousness to the funniest of situations.
My daughter, my mom, and I ran some errands. There was this adorable store that had unique hand-made items, reclaimed pieces of furniture. Just about anything you can imagine.
As we were checking out, there was a customer with a little girl not any older than 18 months (and probably closer to just over a year).
All of a sudden there was this shrill scream that came from this adorable mouth. It startled the cashier and even my daughter because it came out of nowhere.
Of course, she wanted her mom’s attention. The kicking of legs and dropping papers off the counter was not enough to get her attention. So what better way than to light up the ears than with a scream.
And boy did it work! Mom stopped immediately what she was doing and the little one had all the attention.
It doesn’t matter the age, pitch is used to determine the degree of response or reaction needed.
And remember, pitch means the level of intensity of something.
So when you are going about your every day, listen more intently.
Pitch matters!
The K.I.S.S. ~ Pitch matters!
The pitch of a child changes everything. Think about a belly laugh of a young child. You know those YouTube videos you pull up that gets you giggling because they are giggling.
If there wasn’t a certain pitch, you would look at the child strangely and move on.
The pitch of a child does matter and requires training for both you and the child.
So what can you do to teach your child about pitch?
- Listen to your own pitch. How do you sound when you speak to your child? When you want your child’s attention, what volume and inflection are you using?
- Respond appropriately to the situation. Don’t just judge the situation by the pitch. Take everything into account (words, actions, pitch, body language, silence).
- Encourage appropriate pitch. You can do this by role-playing and listening to other people talk.
Words + Pitch + Body Language + (Actions) = Attitude
Let’s raise our children up with an attitude to impact the world, not just to make noise and demand things their way.
