The child making wrong decisions. The husband who questions your purpose. The unexpected accident. When circumstances strike leaving you speechless, what are you to do?
Life happens. Words are not enough to calm the anxious heart and the frightened spirit. What can be done?

If only the moment could be dull and freeing. But NO! You are left speechless.
Grappling for words. What can I shout? What can I scream? No profanities. Words. Where are the words?
Children test our every string of patience. Why can’t they get it right the first time, or with very little damage if it’s done incorrectly.
Traveling up north, I experienced the speechless moments. Here I thought our trip was going so well, only to find out that my car’s tire was losing air, and we were over an hour and a half away from our destination.
Once I decided to have my daughter meet us at the dealership, we unloaded only to reload again. How many times do we need to move in so we can move her out?
As I locked the doors and dropped the keys in the dropbox, a light remained lit in the car. No keys to unlock the doors. I had to leave it with the knowledge that I would now have my oil changed, a slow leak in my tire, and a light on that would most likely leave my car unable to start.
Speechless!!!
The only comment was something about iTunes cards.
Oh how I wanted to say so much more. I wanted to scream. I wanted to jump up and down. I wanted to punch something. I wanted what happened not to have happened.
Life happens leaving me speechless.
So in these circumstances, what is a mom to do?
The K.I.S.S. ~ Be speechless!
“There is something about the quiet of a mother to awake the heart of a child.” ~ Kristianne Wargo
Words can trip us up more than they can help. And sometimes, you need quiet to reflect on the situation immediately. The impact is greater.
“A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” ~ Proverbs 15:1
Now understand, the quick response and shouting comes all to easy. Therefore, refraining from words that should not be shared, and leaving space for the child to sit with his/her own thoughts, opens the heart to learning the lesson. A gift to your child teaching the greater things in life.
- Bite your tongue. (This is assuming everyone is safe.)
- Let the child reflect on the situation.
- Calmly discuss the situation when appropriate.
“Speechless. A gift to your child to teach the greater things in life.”
